Those guys were my role models. I wanted to be just like them. And there was nothing that was going to quash my determination.
Over the years I learnt all there was to know about the sport. I took advice and mentorship from the best of the best and most importantly, I learned how to play the bookmaker.
With the technique that I perfected over time, I was able to get bigger and bigger returns from the smallest bets.
It’s funny – I even got a reputation for being ‘tight’. I would only place the smallest bets, sometimes laughably small, and the other guys would rib me for it. But in the end it was always me that had the last laugh…
You could say I was “laughing all the way to the bank”.
Eventually, the chaps I once looked up to were coming to me for advice! And that was a great feeling.
By the year 2003 I was making close to £2,000 per month from small, consistent bets. I made a promise to myself that as soon as I hit that £2,000 mark, I’d quit my day job to bet full time. And that’s exactly what happened in January 2004. And still to this day I remember that as one of the happiest moments of my life!
Since then, with more time to focus on horse racing, my profit margin has only increased...
